Duck Shorts

"Hmmm, I wonder how this 'video' setting on the digital camera works?" the little duckling asked, with a quizzical tilt of the head. "If I got a couple of my buddies to hop in yon pool, do you think you could try filming us and see how that goes?"

I'll do anything to oblige the ducks, so here's my first attempt at video -- a very brief 30 seconds of the pool. If this works, I'll put up a longer (and hopefully more energetic) video later:

Awww - they grow up so fast... they really, really do. What happens next? Will they live with you forever? Will they fly south in the fall? You're not going to be..gulp.. eating them are you?

Eeeek! No eating of the ducks!!

And no, they won't fly south. Domestic ducks have smaller wings are too heavy to fly except for short distances (200 feet or so - low to the ground). That's why it's bad to turn domestic ducks loose in the wild. They can't escape from predators and when they breed with wild ducks the offspring are flightless.

These ducks will live with us as pets for as long as they live (which can be anywhere from 10-15 years or longer) and we'll eat the eggs they lay (and give away the extras).

If it turns out that we have too many drakes (you should only have one drake to every three hens) we'll have to find homes for the extra boys, but we won't know which are which for awhile yet.

Hilarious! Actually, the funniest thing is that the water isn't quite deep enough to swim, so they're walking on the bottom of the pool.

They're WALKING in the bottom of that pool aren't they???

Duck confit is really really good you know...

Not that I could eat an animal I actually know. I'm a wuss like that.

They are so sweet. I can't believe they got so big that fast. I couldn't eat the duckies either. But about halfway through the video I was wondering if I could order me up some chicks and and have lots of BBQ chicken in the fall. Yeah, I'm going to hell. I know. But it's a chicken and chickens aren't cute.
