A Hierachy of Citizenship?

Good news, California! Your marriage will still be there when you get home from work! Your rights are still more righteous that my rights!

You won't have to turn your marriage license over to the gay couple down the street. There's no danger of Tim and Victor or Michelle and Jennifer getting the same cool rights as you. The California Supreme Court has confirmed your God-given right to be better than people like me! Woohoo!

If I were you, I'd take this opportunity to do something really uplifting to celebrate your freshly validated sanctity. Pizza? Beer? Hookers? How does one celebrate sanctity?

Well - the "one man, one woman" family is intact (at least, from now on in California). And believe me, that's a good thing, given some of the really healthy, very moral "one man one woman" unions I see dragging their sexually abused histories (and their parents upheld the sanctity of marriage - you betcha!), tortured children and various other dysfunctional pieces of baggage through my office. THAT's what you "two women" or "two men" unions might threaten! Robin

Plessy v. Ferguson was the law of the land for a long time, but sixty years later blacks finally got Brown v. Board of Education. "Civil unions but not marriage" is the latest version of "separate but equal." The difference is (I hope) that civil rights for gays and lesbians is going to happen a lot quicker. That's cold comfort, I know, when it seems like the yahoos have won another round, but the steamroller of history is going to run right over those folks.
